Communications and Policy Advisor to the CO State Senate Majority Leader           

The primary role of the Communications and Policy Advisor is to assist Majority Leader Steve Fenberg with press, digital media strategy, and speech writing. The person in this role will also manage  a portfolio of policy areas for the Majority Leader, as well as supporting the caucus as needed on strategy and the shepherding of legislation.


Communications & Social Media

  • Manage Senator Fenberg’s social media channels, focusing on communications to the general public about the senate caucus policy victories and priorities and building out a more engaging public profile for Senator Fenberg
  • Write a weekly email newsletter, with assistance from Senator Fenberg’s Legislative Aide
  • Write op-eds and other public communications about relevant issues, policies, and bills
  • Manage interactions with the press when Senator Fenberg isn’t available
  • Write remarks for public events, as necessary
  • Coordinate and work closely with the Senate Caucus Communications staff, as necessary


  • Manage a portfolio of Senator Fenberg’s bill areas by conducting research, writing committee testimony, writing floor speeches, recruiting committee witnesses, and managing relevant partner relationships. Policy areas include, but are not limited to:
    • Oil & gas legislation
    • Renewable energy policy
    • Election administration
    • Campaign finance reform
    • Higher education & student debt
    • Marijuana and hemp policy
  • Take meetings when Sen. Fenberg can’t / doesn’t need to attend and report back on major developments and highlights
  • Attend and provide staff support for meetings, as necessary, including daily morning prep meetings, leadership team meetings, and committee lead meetings

Leadership Support

  • Support other Senate leadership members, as needed, with preparation for caucus meetings
  • Assist caucus with strategy around legislation introduction and shepherding through the process
  • Reach out to caucus members to offer assistance on a regular basis

Preferred experience & qualities:

  • Previous work and interest in politics, government, advocacy or public policy
  • Strong aptitude for and/or knowledge of social media strategy and implementation
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with impeccable attention to detail
  • Adept at Twitter, Facebook and other social media
  • Ability to use newsletter and website management software such as Mailchimp and WordPress
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work well with others
  • Enjoys working with others in a collaborative environment
  • Organized, thorough and self-motivated, with an ability to stay on top of tasks with limited supervision
  • Good judgment, flexibility, common sense, a sense of humor, and the ability to stay calm under pressure
