An organizer at her core, Senator Gonzales has dedicated her life to organizing for justice in Colorado. In her first term in office, she allocated millions of dollars towards affordable housing, strengthened protections for immigrant communities from ICE, repealed the death penalty, and streamlined Colorado’s marijuana regulations.

Senator Gonzales lives in Jefferson Park with her husband Ben and their shih-tzus Chookie and Panda.

Senadora Julie Gonzales is a progressive Democrat serving north, west, and downtown Denver as the state Senator for Senate District 34. Senator Gonzales serves as Chair of the Judiciary Committee, Vice Chair of the Local Government & Housing Committee, as a member of the Committee on Legal Services, and as a member of the Appropriations Committee. She serves as the Colorado Senate Democrats Majority Whip, the Co-Chair of the Colorado Democratic Latino Caucus, and the Treasurer of the Board of Latino Legislative Leaders.

With roots in Colorado that go back generations, Senator Gonzales was born in Arizona and raised in south Texas. After graduating from Yale University, Senator Gonzales moved to Denver, where she had previously spent summers in high school working to save money for college. Her mother was an elementary school teacher and her father was a rancher and medical cannabis producer. They taught her the value of hard work, honesty, and the importance of lifting as we climb.
