Senate District 28
Senator Rhonda Fields was elected to the Colorado State Senate in 2016, becoming the first African-American woman to serve Aurora's Senate District 29, Arapahoe County. A strong advocate for women, families, children, and public safety, Rhonda was first elected in 2010 and re-elected in 2012 and 2014 to the Colorado House of Representatives for the City of Aurora.
In 2012, Senator Fields was appointed as Speaker Pro Tem, which no other black woman had led in the state legislature. In 2018, she was elected by her Senate colleagues to serve as Assistant Majority Leader. She currently represents Senate District 28 at the Capitol, and serves as Chair of the Health & Human Services Committee and as a member of the Education Committee. She has a proven record of bringing people together to get the job done.
A value-driven progressive leader, Rhonda has established a reputation as unafraid to tackle tough issues on behalf of her constituents, for a more just and safer Colorado. She has ushered in new laws that help grow our state economy, protect our environment, veterans, women's rights, and basic human rights of the underserved or homeless. Senator Fields is an advocate for crime victims and has continuously fought for justice and fairness in our state, and prevailed.
Rhonda has aggressively represented the needs of the most vulnerable people in her district and throughout the State. She is a champion of quality public education and helped secure nearly $500 million in funding for K-12 programs – helping to reduce school truancy and recruitment of teachers. She continues to work to expand early childhood education and workforce programs to prepare young people for a bright and successful future.
Rhonda is a longtime resident of Aurora, Colorado, where she raised her two children, Maisha and Javad. Both children went to local public schools and each graduated from Colorado State University. Her daughter Maisha, and her son-in-law live in Centennial where they are raising her grandchildren.
