Senate District 18
Steve Fenberg serves as President of the Colorado Senate. Steve was originally elected to the Colorado State Senate in 2016, representing Senate District 18. After serving as Senate Majority Leader for over three years, Steve was elected to serve as President of the Senate in February 2022. Before entering the Senate, Steve served for a decade as the founding Executive Director for New Era Colorado, the largest state-based young voter mobilization organization in the country. Under Steve’s leadership, New Era Colorado registered hundreds of thousands of young people to vote, helping shape Colorado’s current political landscape.
Steve is a progressive voice at the Capitol, championing legislation to combat the climate crisis, increase election access, and make structural reforms that advance economic and social justice. A few of his legislative highlights include:
Passing a transformative, future-looking transportation package that includes the largest investment in electric vehicles and charging stations in the United States;
Establishing the Department of Early Childhood tasked with creating a unified early childhood system in Colorado;
Creating a discounted state parks pass that will increase access to Colorado’s 43 state parks while generating funding for maintenance and expansion;
Passing historic reforms to the oil and gas laws in our state, placing the health and safety of Coloradans above the profits of oil and gas corporations;
Increasing voter access by creating automatic voter registration in Colorado, modernizing our election law and passing redistricting reform and anti-gerrymandering legislation;
Banning the inhumane and discredited practice of gay conversion therapy;
Addressing the student debt crisis by regulating student loan servicers, increasing awareness of public student loan forgiveness, and establishing a 529 college savings account with $100 for every child born in Colorado;
Expanding in-state tuition rates to refugees attending Colorado colleges and universities, as well as American Indian students with historic tribal ties to Colorado;
Creating the first legal right for homeowners to install and use battery storage systems and prohibiting interference from electric utilities; and
Expanding voter registration for felons coming out of the criminal justice system and restoring voting rights to parolees.
As President of the Senate, Steve serves on the Executive Committee and the Legislative Council. He has previously served on the State, Veterans, and Military Affairs Committee, the Agriculture & Natural Resources Committee, the Governor’s Council on Blockchain Technology, and the Bipartisan Election Advisory Committee.
Steve is a co-owner of Bread Bar located in the historic town of Silver Plume and, on rare occasions, makes an appearance as a guest bartender. Steve lives in Boulder with his wife Lindsay, daughters Isa and Marlow, and their dog Ellie.
